So, yeah. You think the ND Miata has too few HP. I think so, too, but how much more pow can the car take until it changes completely? 10? 20? 50? 100?

I think about 175-185 would be the sweet spot. In other words, put the damn 2.5 SkyActiv in there!

350 more should do the trick.

Uh, 200?
You know, so i can hang around in the dragstrip against used SLK55*.
*Which was cheaper has a Carmax Warranty.

It's not about power. If you can't go fast with 90 horsepower, 900 ain't gonna help ya. I genuinely feel that.

So what does it have now - 150? I think the point of this car, as I realized when I drove a Gen. 1 (and bought a CRX Si instead) is that you can have fun at the limit. I wanted the Miata, but was overruled by the then girlfriend. To me, it doesn't need that much power, but I haven't drive one since they gained weight, to be fair.

I think 30 more for both hp and torque would be perfect. It will still be the same car at that power level.

that's where tuning come in to play!

People act like having 200 HP will ruin the character of the car. It won't. It will still be an easy to drive Miata. It will still handle well and it will still be lovely to drive around turns. Except that you'll also be able to enjoy time spent between turns.

170 should be fine. I'd be more concerned with torque. I'd say 160ft-lbs is the ticket. My Mini weighs a good bit more than the new Miata, but 170hp and 162ft-lbs makes it feel very quick indeed. I think part of that is the way the power comes on. It's not perfectly linear, as their is a boost surge at around 2500rpm as the supercharger gets fuller into it's spool. Once in the boost, that surge is instantly accessible with the throttle and you can definitely feel the torque. It makes the car feel like it has a lot more power than it does.
While I would like to see the new Miata supercharged, I know it's not going to happen. What I think would work, though, is an extra 15-20 horsepower and get the torque numbers close to equal to the horsepower, then adjust the gearing to make the best use of that torque at the mid-range.

I would grab a 2.0 TSi from a Mk7 Golf GTI or Golf R and transplant it into the Miata and then it should have enough power to fight cars like the Alfa 4C..
